A boiler service comprises of visual inspections starting at the gas meter all the way through to the flue terminal, visual on electrics, ventilation and pipework install before removing the boiler case for further visuals, then to clean out the heat exchanger, burner, condense trap, magnetic filter where necessary. Lastly the gas safety tests are completed. We can advise the customer on our findings. BoilerOne recommend you instruct a gas safe registered engineer to service your boiler.

A boiler service should include a visual check over of the appliance and the installation. It’s not always necessary but a clean of the heat exchanger and replace any door gaskets. Check that the safety devices are working as they should and then a Flue gas analysis to make sure it’s burning clean and the flue is intact. The condensate trap should be cleaned too. A gas rate is done to make sure the appliance is also performing correctly. Older appliances would require a bit more work and time.

A boiler service can be 3 different things, 1.A basic safety check and cleaning the condensate trap to comply with manufacturer requirements for first 2 plus yrs depending on the make of boiler. This is taking flue gas analysis and gas rate or burner pressure. 2..Next would be doing above and adjustment of ratios on Gas analysis of combination fumes. 3. Next would be remove burner on some modern models and clean the heat engines/exchanger. Replace any seals if manufacturers required it or they are detierated then put back together. Then take further readings with analyser. Seals etc Re usually charged as extra. If parts are found to be faulty on a service its likely to be charged for the part and labour.

A visual inspection of the flue, any ventilation requirements, any signs of staining around the boiler. Inspect for any signs of water leaks. Question customer to see if there has been any problems. Electrically isolate the boiler. Remove the burner and inspect electrodes/insulation, clean burner with water or air compressor. Hoover out heat exchanger. Replace any burner seals/gaskets. Carry out gas tightness test, carry out gas rate at low/high rate (if burner is modulating) and check with manufacturers instructions. Carry out flue gas analyser checks as per manufacturers instructions and print out a record, adjust if necessary. Check any disturbed joints with leak detection fluid. If the boiler is open flue carry out spillage/flue flow tests. If the boiler is pressurised check the pressure gauge and top up if necessary, put heating on and check radiators are getting hot/need bleeding. Clean boiler, remind customer of next service due date. Remind customer about expert trades and the services of other tradesmen available on the website.

A full boiler service will include stripping the boiler down, gaining access to the heat exchanger and cleaning through. Depending if it is a new or old boiler the condense trap will need cleaning out and re filling. If it is a combination or system boiler the pressure vessel charge should be tested. The system pressure should be checked and re filled if necessary to manufactures instructions. A thorough check of the boiler will be carried out for leaks or signs of distress. The flue system will be visually checked and the terminal should be cleaned if necessary. Once re fitted tests will be carried out to include the gas inlet working pressure, gas rates to check how much gas the boiler is burning, a flue gas analyser test and checked with manufactures instructions. All of these are needed to check the boiler is running safely and efficiently. If you have a system filter this should be cleaned out to check the system for levels of iron oxide and non metallic debris.

HeatTech answered the question "What's included in a boiler service?"

A typical boiler service would start with a quick chat with the user to highlight any existing problems. Then I would carry out a visual inspection of the boiler, flue, flue termination and pipework. The heat exchanger will be checked and cleaned if necessary, along with the condensate trap if needed. The gas supply inlet pressure and burner pressure are checked along with the flame picture where possible. I would then carry out flue gas analysis with the boiler in both high fire and minimum fire and check these in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, then the flue integrity will be checked. The appliance would then be gas rated and any safety devices checked for correct operation. You will then be left with all the relevant paperwork to prove the service has been carried out to the correct standars and by a gas safe registered company

A boiler service comprises of stripping the appliance down to clean it, checking and recharging the expansion vessel where required, condensate trap removed and cleaned, gas pressure and gas rates checked, flue gas analysis to check the appliance is working safely and efficiently. The flue will be inspected for corrosion, to make sure its been fitted correctly and securely. If you have a magnetic filter, like a magnaclean that would be removed and cleaned also. The heating system and hot water should be checked to ensure its all working as it should.
