SNC Electrical answered the question "What are the benefits / advantages of installing CCTV?"

I have been in the security industry for over 25 years and I can categorically tell you this. It’s not a question of the benefits of having CCTV installed, it’s a question of having a suitable CCTV system installed. Suitable is the operative word here. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend or how good you think the system is, or you’ve been told it is. If you don’t have the correct system installed or don’t have it installed in the correct way, then you may as well not have it at all. I have lost count over the years the number of people have called me up out of the blue and asked me if I can help them pull footage off their DVR for the police, after an incident because their installer is nowhere to be seen. I’ve turned up at their property, located the footage, only for it to be unusable. It’s at that point they realise the £100’s they’ve spent was a complete waste. An experienced, time served expert is worth their weight in gold. The right type of camera, placed in the correct place can mean the difference between a burglar trying their luck, or walking right past. In the event of a break in, a good system can and will be used to convict a criminal. So the answer to this long winded response, if a system is chosen and erected correctly, the benefits are endless. If not, read all above again.

CCTV can be used for many different reasons. Most popular tend to be home or business protection. But lately cctv systems can be used for video verification. Meaning if an alarm is triggered it can send an image from a cctv camera to alert you of an intruder or hopefully just a false alarm. There are many reasons for CCTV and your installer should be able to provide a system that would suit your needs.

The main benefits of having CCTV Deterrent: even if a CCTV camera is switched off it will still provide a highly visible deterrent. If a burglar is deciding which building to try to break into, he’s far more likely to choose the property which isn’t fitted with a CCTV camera. Insurance: installing CCTV offers a great way to discover what’s going on when you’re not there! Unfortunately the majority of thieves don’t go around wearing balaclavas and so when something goes missing, CCTV can help you get to the bottom of the problem. Ideal for preventing business theft and internal fraud, CCTV provides unbeatable protection. Evidence gathering: if the worst happens and your property is broken into, CCTV footage provides important evidence for the police and can prove incredibly useful when making an insurance claim. Safety: CCTV can also be used to keep your employees or family safe. Thanks to modern technology, it is now possible to view live CCTV footage when you’re not there, helping you to monitor what’s going on whilst you’re away from your home or business. Useful: CCTV footage is often used by the police to publicise criminal activity and catch the culprits. Reassurance: remote access CCTV is ideal if you spend time away from the office but want to keep an eye on what’s going on when you’re not there. In addition, CCTV can also help protect staff from false allegations made by customers. Professional: installing CCTV shows you take security seriously, providing your business with a professional, business-like image.

Consideration should be given to installing CCTV to combat and deter criminal activity as well as to make householders and employees feel safer at work and at home. 1. Crime deterrent It goes without saying that having a CCTV camera installed at your premises will act as a serious deterrent to criminals and anyone carrying out illegal activities. The sight of a CCTV camera infers an air of danger and the presence of the law, deterring anyone planning to carry out a crime from doing so. 2. Monitors activities CCTV systems are able to keep track of what is happening at the premises where they are installed. By monitoring the activity of workers and visitors at your business’ site, you and your workforce can have total peace of mind about exactly what is going on under your roof. 3. Collect evidence In the unfortunate event of a crime occurring at your premises, having a CCTV system really does pay dividends as it provides a way of collecting evidence to help ‘suss out’ exactly what happened. Crimes can be solved far more easily with additional evidence from a CCTV camera, helping place times, locations and, most importantly, suspects. 4. Decision Making When it comes to settling disputes, footage from security cameras can be incredibly important. This applies to both domestic and commercial scenarios. Whether it’s dealing with family disagreements, employee feuds or altercations between staff and customers, by referring to CCTV footage, you’ll know the truth. 5. Keep records It is always a good idea to keep records of when your staff are coming into and checking out of your site, as well as when deliveries are made or visitors enter the building, so you can ensure everything’s running smoothly. There are many further reasons why CCTV really is an advantageous installation for any business premises, so why not consider getting cameras installed at your company’s site and give yourself and your staff total peace of mind in the safety of your operations?

What Are The Benefits Of Using A CCTV System In 2019? We’ve gathered together some of the key benefits of using a CCTV system can have at your place of work and residency. A CCTV (closed-circuit television) system allows the use of videos cameras to monitor the interior and exterior of a property, transmitting the signal to a monitor or set of monitors. More and more of us are switching on the benefits of CCTV security systems. In the UK it is now estimated that there are more cameras per person than any other country in the world. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan Howe promoted the use of CCTV, saying that cameras should be installed by homeowners and businesses to help detectives solve crimes. The need for residential and business CCTV systems is higher than ever before. With the number of police officers patrolling our streets hitting a record low, total recorded offences are up by 14%, as reported by The Independent in 2018. Aside from the obvious advantage of being able to monitor your premises, here are the benefits of using a CCTV system in 2019: 1. DETER CRIMINAL ACTIVITY This is the biggest and most recognised benefit for those who choose to add CCTV systems to their property. Outside of being able to monitor your premises, CCTV cameras are an excellent deterrent for burglars. Just like seeing a mounted alarm system, an intruder seeing cameras may decide that it’s easier and safer to move elsewhere. It’s much better to prevent intrusion than dealing with it after it’s occurred. “Most criminals are pretty disorganised, they don’t think about it. The reason the cameras are high is two-fold. One is to keep it out of harm’s way.” Studies have found that using CCTV in car parks resulted in a 51% decrease in crime; in public transportation areas a 23% decrease in crime; and in public settings, a 7% decrease in crime. Even the lowest figure, 7%, is a significant improvement. A report written by the Office for National Statistics in 2017 found that 2 in 100 homes were victims of robberies, with 40% of incidents taking place during working hours whilst occupiers are away from their properties. In the same report, 70% of burglars gain entry to homes via the front door, while the remaining 30% use windows as an entry point. Therefore, pointing cameras towards these routes of entry is the best and most strategic place to add your CCTV device. 2. IMPROVED HOME INSURANCE RATES By deterring criminal activity, CCTV security systems reduce your home and property insurance costs. You are less of a target, so the risk is lowered, which means the price of your insurance decreases too. “If you’re the victim of burglary and your home isn’t properly secured, you may find that your home insurance provider could question your claim and refuse to reimburse you for any loss.” As well as being less of a target, CCTV offers evidence towards insurance claims that you may not have had otherwise. The more evidence you have to support your claim, the better, proving beyond doubt the circumstances surrounding your claim. 3. PEACE OF MIND A camera system provides people with an increased sense of security and reassurance, particularly in areas where the crime rate is high. Many of the more sophisticated models are wireless, meaning they can be viewed and monitored from your smartphone or tablet. This gives you the ability to check in and review your premises at the click of a button, so your home security is always in reach. “As importantly, you get a whole shot of what happened at the event: What did they steal? Did they use a knife? You get all that. But more relevant today is a face. That’s what we need.” It acts as a comfort blanket, giving you the freedom to get on with your life, confident that your property is being watched. 4. COST-EFFECTIVE A CCTV system is a cost-effective form of security. Once the system has been installed they are very easy to maintain and require little reparations. Ensure that your cameras are cleaned in order to receive the best performance from your system. Other than this, CCTV systems will keep your premises secure for years.

CCTV mainly offers a deterrent to potential thieves and rarely has to be used to identify thieves in domestic situations. CCTV packages offered by most mainstream shops do not offer picture quality usually good enough to identify criminals. I would always ask the installer to provide the equipment based on the individuals environment to ensure the system is suitable for purpose.

According to the most recent government figures, “2 in 100 households [were] victims of domestic burglary” over the year the data was gathered, with 40% of incidents taking place during work hours when fewer people are likely to be home. Consequently, having cameras pointed at your home’s doors (through which 70% of burglars gain entry to a property) and windows (the remaining 30%) is the best method by which to determine when a burglary took place, as well as making it easier to identify an intruder. This is particularly beneficial in cases where criminals have scoped out a property before breaking and entering, as you will be able to review footage and determine just how many times certain individuals have assessed a property over time. This could then halt a potential break-in before it takes place.

A cctv system also provides a very good deterrent to criminals as they will often opt for an “easier “ target. A decent spec cctv system also offers much more than just a platform for recording images, they can also allow remote viewing, audible alarms should anything be tampered with or a certain area be tampered with. At the higher end they can also be paired with proximity audio and lighting deterrents for further security.

The main job of CCTV is to gather evidence to allow or help a prosecution of any offenders. The advantage of installing CCTV is firstly it acts as a large deterrent. If a possible intruder or shoplifter knows they are being recorded, they are less likely to choose your premises or home to carry out an offence. It allows you to keep an eye on things and alerts you to anything out of the ordinary happening around your property or business. Most medium to high end systems now have tripwire, motion detection and missing object settings that alert you remotely when something changes in their field of veiw. They give peace of mind, greater security and if installed and specified correctly, can allow prosecution of offenders.
