I would Consider the following before I submitted a price to paint a 6 panel door. How long is it going to take me. Is the door to be painted interior or exterior. Has the door been previously painted or is it untreated hardwood or a softwood finish. Is it just one side of both sides of the door. Type of finish (oil based or wood stain) number of coats.

Given that a decorator is likely to have to visit the "door" in question around 5-6 times the cost is normally fairly high, unless something else is being done in the house - normally customers would have the doors done when each room is decorated and then it can be easily built into the cost of that room. However, say a new door has been fitted - there are a lot of variables which will affect cost. Is it bare wood, has it been pre-primed, is the paint to be used oil or water based? All these factors will affect cost.

A door in isolation will be at least three visits and will cost around £80 for the labour alone, then the cost of the paint etc. However, if there is more than just the one door and the Decorator can fill a full day, that one door drops in price considerably. You will need to get a Decorator to take a look at the door, they can assess the amount of work involved and give you a quote based on its condition and the finish required.

Cost depend on a number of factors which will be used to calculate a true cost. Size of door, hard or soft wood, bare timber or previously painted, any existing damage or filling required and what will be the finish? How much preparation is involved. And then it would be a case of one side or the entire door. A bare timber door may require sealing or stain blocking to ensure tannins from the timber do not leach into the finish coats. For a bare timber door you could be looking at a minimum of 5 coats per side to achieve an acceptable finish. You could be looking at a weeks work for a grand entrance door or a full days work for an interior door. So finally, cost will also depend on the experience of the decorator. A good decorator will not come cheap.

Again another question that will vary has there are so many variables ,is the door already painted.If so what are the previous coatings.What finish are you looking for and in what paint system would you like,water based or oil based.Or is the door in question to be varnished or stained

A standard 6 panel door one side is around £15 to £25 depending on what condition it's in as in if it's a new door the prep work will be less. If it's an old door it may need filling and more prep in the Sanding down. If it's a new door it may of come primed but if it hasn't then it may need knowing and priming first, then 2 undercoats and 1 top coat will be applied with sanding inbetween coats.

If we are talking about a standard interior 6 panel door, the rates vary from the type of finish you’d like. Most standard 6 panel doors come ‘pre primed’ so they will need one undercoat & 1-2 coats of the finish coat, in between all of this you have to factor in sanding & filling. The average rate for a 6 panel door in East Midlands would be £15-£20 for one coat for one side of the door.
