How often should a house be rewired?
There is no set time for a house to be required as it all goes down to the initial installation and the upkeep of the installation itself. It is best to do Electrical inspection condition reports (EICR) in a regular basis to cede the condition of the current wiring itself. Other factors may you may want to consider is the present need of electrical outlets, light and other necessities that you may need. A competent person would be able to tell if your current needs are ok with your infrastructure already in place. I would often say after 20years you may start seeing deterioration on the integrity of the installation itself, although I’ve seen 40 years old installation hold up well and give excellent readings when tested. A good ballpoint would be every 25years or if you are close to that time and doing major renovations to the house itself , it may be the best time as you would not have to disturb the house a few years down the line for a rewire, meaning more plastering and decoration.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of an RCBO?
Advantage of RCBO Is that along with providing additional protection to each individual circuit in the event of a over-voltage fault it also provides earth leakage fault protection and would disconnect in the event of someone getting electrocuted. Disadvantage of RCBO is it may be a lot more expensive than using RCD with clusters of MCB.
How much does an electrical safety check / electrical installation condition (EICR) report cost?
The cost for an Electrical condition report will vary from property to property. A Electrical condition report is find per fuse board/consumer unit. I charge however up to 6 circuits £150 and 7-10 circuits is £200. Above that will be £40 per consumer unit and £25 per circuits. I also will charge an additional £40 for small fixes up to 1/2 hr and £70 up to an hr.
