How often should a house be rewired?

There are no set guidelines as to when a property should be rewired. Just because your wiring’s old, it doesn’t mean it’s unsafe. Many factors can affect the wear and tear of your electrical installation, including the materials used and how your property has been used. We would advise that a periodic inspection is carried out on owner-occupied properties at least every 10 years and every five years in rented accommodation. The test will certify whether the electrics in a property are safe and tell you if anything needs upgrading. You should carry out regular checks around the house on the condition of your cables, switches, sockets and other accessories. If you notice anything unusual - for example, burn marks on plugs and sockets, sounds of ‘arcing’ (buzzing or crackling), fuses blowing or circuit-breakers tripping - get a registered electrician to check your electrics as soon as possible!

What are the advantages / disadvantages of using LED lights?

LED lighting uses up to 90% less energy than incandescent and halogen bulbs, and up to 60% less energy than CFL bulbs – which were the first energy-efficient bulbs to be widely sold. Despite this massive reduction in energy consumption, LED lights still produce the same amount of light as their incandescent, halogen and CFL equivalents. LED lights last much longer than halogen, incandescent and CFL bulbs. While older lighting often lasts barely a year, if not just a few months, LED lighting has a 15-year average lifespan, giving you far better value for money and saving you yet more money on replacements. Another great advantage of LED lighting is that the technology allows manufacturers to give consumers much more choice in their lighting. Firstly, you can get LED lighting in a range of colour temperatures, warm white, cool white & daylight. This allows you to pick the perfect colour temperature for the room you are lighting. Secondly, you can get LED bulbs in a range of shapes and styles. Finally, the latest innovations in smart lighting give you total control over your lighting, allowing you to customise and programme your lights in any way that you can think of! While traditional bulbs are made with glass, LED lights encased in plastic or epoxy, which are much stronger and unlikely to break if dropped. LED lights convert the majority of their energy into light, rather than heat. This means that they are always cool to the touch, in sharp contrast to the heat generated by traditional bulbs. The impact of traditional light bulbs on the environment is incredible, which is why incandescent bulbs are now banned in the UK. LED lighting reduces carbon emissions and does not contain harmful chemicals such as mercury.
