There can be rotten food debris stuck inside the overflow pipe and also in the trap below. Sometime using a cleaning product can help alleviate the smell by pouring it down the overflow if that's where the debris is. Sometimes a new waste, overflow or trap is the best solution. You can try to disassemble the trap if you're on a budget but new ones cost very little and you are not then reliant on old washers to reseal properly.

In most cases the trap assembly and connected waste pipe work is partially blocked with food waste and stagnant waste water along with fats and soap which has congealed over time .Recommend taking apart waste assembly and cleaning out the affected section of pipe or trap assembly etc .Then refit and test all the pipework and to ensure your sink now drains efficiently

This could be down to a blockage in the waste system which causes negative/positive pressure. Positive pressure causes smells and gasses from the waste system to push past the trap seal of water entering the kitchen and normally happens when the washing machine or dish washer is running. Negative pressure is when the blockage causes the trap seal of water to be pulled and eventually you lose the seal of water allowing gasses to freely enter the room.

We have found the most common cause of smells coming from the kitchen sink is the overflow pipe. The overflow pipe is usually at the top of the sink or connected to the draining board. We have found when this is removed there is food and general waste blocking the overflow pipe. I would recommend running water down the overflow to help keep clean.

If your kitchen sink smells like rotten eggs, this is likely to be the waste trap (u-bend) where the water trap has pulled, a common cause would be a dishwasher or washing machine waste and when they pump to waste the trap for the kitchen sink will also empty leaving the pipe open to the connecting drainage pipework, smells can work their way up into the kitchen BoilerOne recommend you consult a verified plumber to diagnose the problem.

Many things can can cause unpleasant smell in the kitchen waste. if you a lot of food waste or grease in the trap, or bacteria or mould in the overflow. if you have a lot of deposits in the trap then it maybe siphoning the trap seal which stops the drain smells coming into the property if it is connected to a combined drainage system. Most domestic cleaners will sort the bacteria and smells but if the trap is blocked or has a partial blockage then it will need to be removed and cleaned, most people can do it themselves but if you are not happy or unsure about plumbing then a plumber should be called.

A common cause is the washing machine or dishwasher being connected to the trap below (usually a white fitting, attached to the waste). As this connection sits above the water level (the barrier for smell), Sometimes the grey washing machine / dishwasher waste pipe has been incorrectly installed, excessive amount of pipe holding water. An easy test, is to remove the grey pipe and simply smell if it's the same. If it is, check if the installation is in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions (can usually be googled if not present), and fit to suit. This can be messy, so ensure a large bowl below & it's advisable to wear gloves. DON'T attempt if you've used any off the shelf pipe cleaner ie Mr Muscle, Contact a professional. If the washing machine or dishwasher isn't connected, i'd try one of the other recommendations on this post.

As already stated an off the shelf drain cleaner should solve this issue, if not then the trap needs to be taken apart and cleaned out. This is not too difficult as the just I screw from the waste pipe under the sink itself. Normally something like MR Muscle sink and drain cleaner is the best option.

The usual reason for the bad smell is a build up of fats, grease and food waste in the water trap beneath the plug hole that bacteria thrive in. As these grow they give off the smell. An off the shelf drain cleaner will normally solve this. If its very blocked the trap may need to be removed and cleaned. However there can be underlying reasons for a build up. The waste pipe may not have enough ‘fall’ (the slope that is needed to ensure water can flow away easily). I have seen some that even slope uphill with obvious results. Also many newer houses have the waste pipe going straight into the soil pipe. If the system has been added to i.e. for a washing machine the additional flow can cause a vacuum and siphon the water from the sink trap allowing smells from the drain to travel up the pipe. So. 1, check the pipework. 2. Try an off the shelf drain cleaner. If that doesn’t work then remove the trap to clean it.
