Start by giving a lot of thought about what you need from an extension, then if for example it’s to make a open plan kitchen/dining room think about what you want for the rooms you are replacing. Contact someone who can prepare plans and they can help with getting the best from your extension and will submit your plans to the council for planning permission if this is required. They will also prepare your building regulations which will be required even if your new extension comes under permitted development. Next get 3 quotes minimum from local builders.

When planning an extension the first step should be contacting a reputable architect/draughtsman to conduct a feasibility survey of the property, it’s always an idea to have a wish list of the goals you wish to achieve by extending whether you’re going up, out or even below the property, is it for that dream kitchen/diner with bi folding doors, do you want a utility room, perhaps a downstairs toilet or wetroom incorporating into the build, a decent architect would normally have a structural engineer they work along side to determine load factors on removing loadbearing walls etc, they can then submit the plans once drawn up to the local authority for approval, by this point you should have a rough understanding of a budget for the project, you can now contact builders in your area for quotes as you will have been given plans and building regs drawings to work from I’d recommend getting 3 quotes, don’t always go with the cheapest do your homework check reviews speak to people who have had similar work completed ask the builders for pictures of previous work etc, although most builders try to keep the mess and inconvenience to a minimum be prepared for some upheaval, lastly good luck
