Single glazing is more commonly found these days in listed or conservation properties and offers you very low levels of energy efficiency. Double glazing has come on in leaps and bounds now and has a number of options to offer you varying degrees of energy efficiency, most installation companies these days will only offer an 'A' rated window as standard which is a make up of glass with a special bar in the middle of the two panes and has Argon gas in the cavity. Triple Glazing is a marketeers dream in that they will tell you how much more thermally efficient these are and even on some occasions how they will reduce noise levels, in my opinion (i have been in the industry over 25 years and have been to Double Glazing v's Triple Glazing seminars ) the actual up lift on cost to how much more energy efficient they are will take approx (depends on number of windows and floor area of your property) 15+ years for you to gain your money back on your energy bills. If it is noise reduction you are aiming for it is far better to have a double glazed unit with what the industry calls optiphonic glass as this glass has an invisible film on it which is only there to break down sound waves.
