Whilst generally speaking planning permission is not required, there are certain times that a fence of any description would not be permitted. There are some housing estates that have an open plan policy and actually prohibit the erection of any kind of divide between properties, especially to the fronts of properties. One quick call to the local council in your area will give you the correct and relevant advice.
