Testing the fire alarm in a domestic property usually means pressing the test button on each detector(and checking all detectors sound when one is pressed). Depending on the property usage you may need to record the results of this with the date of testing in a fire alarm logbook. If you have a fire alarm panel installed with call points and detectors then you would need a test key for the call points and a means of setting off the detectors(smoke spray). It is generally better to employ a company to carry this out for you to ensure the procedure is carried out correctly and all paperwork is documented correctly. The installer of the system should give you appropriate advice as to what you need to do.

For domestic premises they are usually tested by pressing and holding a small button in the centre of the unit. For larger systems normally used in business's or rented accommodation you will need a test key and tailored advice for your individual system, due to the volume of different fire detection equipment available no single advice would be correct. Your installer should be able to provide a full demonstration of the system installed.
