In the UK with a high likelihood of frosts and cold weather, I would recommend a minimum depth of 750mm for at least 75% of the total area, with a shallower shelf around the perimeter of 450mm. If the pond is likely to experience long periods of being iced over, you might also need to incorporate an aeration pump to maintain the oxygen levels.
