Peter installed two new bathroom electric lighting circuits, relocating the immersion circuit to the loft, and installing a new Drayton WISER wireless heating control unit. He also discovered a potential fault with the incoming power supply and liaised with SSE. Peter's quality of work was exceptional, he poses great problem solving skills and communicted extremely well with us. Peter kept us well informed throughout the project and provided thorough follow up notes and documentation. We've had no issues with his work and should we have any issues I have no doubt that he would fix this as soon as possible. My wife and I would highly reccomend Peter to anyone else that is looking for a competent and professional electrician.

Does rewiring a house add value?

It will certainly give you peace of mind. And bring your installation up to date. Nowadays we tends to have far more electrical items but they use far less electricity. Trailing sockets in permanent use can be dangerous. We now have SMART electrical equipment and control systems. Almost all electrical items nowadays have delicate components, PCBs, LED or Neon lights. All of these can be damaged by even small transient voltages (power surges) so a rewire should include surge protection. In an ideal world anyone buying a house would have the electrical system checked so yes, a rewire should add value. Sadly many people only discover poor or dangerous electrics AFTER they move in, by which time it adds a kit to their costs when they need to get things fixed.

Does my house need rewiring? What are the signs your house needs rewiring?

signs include age; age of the house plus age of the existing wiring. If the consumer unit (fuse board) still has rewirable fuses - it is OLD, with protection against overcurrent (too much demand for power overheating the wiring). If it has individual circuit breakers with a button or switch it may not be "as old". If it has one or two switch units marked 'RCD' or 'RCCB' then you have protection against electric shock (fault current). One or more of these devices will protect a group of mini circuit breakers (MCB aka 'a fuse') - one MCB per circuit. More modern installations have a combined RCD + MCB per circuit (an RCBO). The consumer unit can indicate the age & state of wiring, or the state it was in when a CU was replaced. Any signs of a lot of DIY changes, extra sockets with cable run in conduit or clipped to skirting also poses concerns. If in doubt, get a competent registered electrician in to assess your installation and quote for an EICR (see previous posts).

Where can LED lights be used in the home?

Anywhere and Everywhere! The range of LEDs now available makes them very versatile. LED comes in a range of colour options from warm white (a sort of yelliw, mood lighting) through to bright white and daylight that give exceptionally bright light. LED also comes in all rainbow colours and, with the right electronic drivers and controlling switches, can be adjusted or switched between seveeal colours and in a range of decorative patterns. Costs of LED are falling and the uses to which LED can be put are expanding.
