About Brush Finish

Started working as a painter and decorator with a friend who already ran a painting business, learning the ropes.
Early 1987, started playing around with paint effects.
September 1987, started working at Harrods doing marbling and other paint effects, with The Picturebox Company .
Stayed with The Picturebox Co, through the late 80's and 90's, doing mainly high profile paint finish work, and extensive new kitchen painting, detailed below.
(Barclay Bros castle, Multiple projects for The Fabric Shop/Zambelli & Friend, Nicky Haslam, Harvey Nichols, and others).
Early 2000's, decided to leave London work and started doing mainly local residential work on my own, trading as Andrew Bigwood Painting and decorating.
Continued to do the odd 'special' job when needed including woodgraining and stone finishes.
Still working in this way, almost entirely on referrals.
Moved from West Clandon to Addlestone at the beginning of 2017, and after a period of trying to make a shift over to a living from photography,
I decided to re-focus on painting and decorating, and early in 2018, rebranded as Brush Finish, with a focus on kitchen and furniture painting.

How much does it cost to paint a ceiling?

Hard to put a price on this but here are some factors to consider: Size of ceiling in square metres: this will affect the time to prepare and paint the entire area. Height of ceiling: the higher the ceiling, the longer it takes to prepare and paint, as it is farther to reach. Stains and repairs: all stains and any other repairs need to be fixed before any full coats of ceiling paint can be applied. Number of coats: dependent on whether colour changes are taking place. White on white will take least time.

Can you paint matt over silk paint?

Yes you can. The old silk finish need to be rubbed down to provide a key for the new paint. In doing this, certain elements of the old silk become active, and if you paint straight over it, the new paint will craze( new paint splits given a fine cracked effect) To overcome this problem, a suitable primer is necessary which is called Zinsser Gardz. Apply this primer to all abraded silk surfaces and allow to dry. The walls are then ready to paint with Matt emulsion.

How much does it cost to paint a room?

Too many variables to state a number, but let's look at the factors to consider: Size of room(height, length and width): This will affect the time it takes to prepare and decorate. Condition of existing decoration: This will also affect the time it takes to prepare and decorate. Degree of colour change: This will affect the number of coats of paint necessary to finish the ceiling, walls and woodwork in new colours. How many doors and windows: The more elements thare are to paint in any given room, the more time it takes to complete. Room space: An empty room is quicker to decorate than a fully furnished room, including books/bookshelves, cupboards and contents, rugs and carpets, and even lighting. All of these elements if left in place, will add to the cost.
